Surviving Cold WeatherWhen winter decides to hit us we have no control and temperatures can vary from mild cold to extreme cold depending on where you live in Michigan. Here in Fowlerville we are mid state and speaking for myself I can get pretty cold. If you are not prepared for the cold weather it can have serious consequences. Here are a few simple tips for surviving the cold weather. Prolonged exposure to extreme cold temperatures combined with moisture or wind can cause injuries such as hypothermia or even frostbite. It is very important that you make sure to dress adequate when it comes to the outdoors. The best way to do this is through layers, applying several layers of clothing fitted loosely around you to allow air flow. Remember you can always take a layer off, but when cold and outside you can not put one on. Wool Loosely woven cotton are the best because they resist trapping moisture and dampness. Your head and neck will lose heat the fastest if they are not covered. It is vital that you use a warm hat and a scarf. A little wrap around your neck will protect the cold from reaching you as easily. The hat should fit snug and cover the ears. Your nose and cheeks are also prone so in extreme weather try to cover them with a scarf or warm wrap. Young kids can wear ski hats to offer face protection. Your feet can also become cold quickly and this can cause your entire body to react and loose heat. Toes are prone to frostbite so it is important that you wear warm winter socks and weatherproof booths or shoes. Speaking of boots they should not only be water proof but they should have a good grip to keep you from falling. Mittens should be well lined with a waterproof exterior to provide optimum protection. Be sure the jacket your purchase is rated appropriately for the temperatures in your area. Ski jackets have come a long way in the past few years. Nice light weight, non bulky, breathable, and very warm. They might cost a few dollars more but they are worth every penny. If you plan to spend time working or playing out in the cold you should also consider a pair of snow pants which will help keep your legs both warm and dry. It will extend the length of time you can stay out in the cold considerably. You need to watch for frostbite during the cold. It can be hard to tell how bad it is until several hours later after the skin has thawed. You need to get anyone suffering from frostbit out of the cold and into a warm place immediately. Then remove any clothing restricting circulation in the area. You should seek medical attention immediately. You home also needs to be prepared to survive the cold. This means keeping sidewalks, driveways, and entrances free from ice and snow. You also need to make sure your gutters are clear so as not to have ice dams build and damage your home. Maintain your house at 65 degrees to ensure lines do not freeze and it’s always a good idea to use pipe wrap on your exposed lines. Make sure all your doors and windows seal properly. Your car should also be prepared for the cold. Make sure you have good winter tires, that your heater is operating optimally and than you have your antifreeze and windshield wiper fluids are good for minus temperatures. Always make sure your windows are clear and unobstructed before driving. And drive with extra caution on winter roads. Surviving the cold doesn’t have to be difficult. A little bit of preparedness and smart thinking will have you, your home, and your car all ready for the cold winter season. And before you know it spring will be here! Have fun and enjoy the winter season. By Deon Melchior 2-1-2009 |
